After working predominantly in Seattle in the United States, this season you will be working in the Ticketing Office at Craigieburn, is this your first winter in New Zealand?
Yes this is my first winter and my first time in New Zealand.
With Craigieburn open, can you describe to us what the role of a Ticketing Officer typically involves?
Ticketing office involves the daily issue of tickets to day skiers, our lodge guests and club members, as well as Chill Pass Holders. I hire and sell tow belts as well. Other responsibilities include our accommodation bookings – taking reservations and payments for accommodation.
What previous experiences do you have working in the mountains?
I have worked as a children’s ski instructor in the past as well as in a retail ski shop and online customer service for a snow sports company in Seattle.
How do you land your job at Craigieburn? Do you have any tips for someone looking to working in the mountains?
I have a strong background in customer service in the ski industry. I have previous experience working with small groups in remote locations (Alaska, Vancouver Island) as well. As far as landing the job, I think it was mostly good timing. I starting looking for jobs in early March and didn’t hear back from anyone but I had better luck end of May – early June getting responses.
Does working on the mountain allow you to have a balance of work and play? You must get time during the day to get up on the slopes?
I definitely have time during the day to ski mid-day. My busy time is mornings, especially if we get a powder day, but by 12:30 I’m usually free to ski until about 3pm or so.
What is it that you like about working in the mountains?
I like being about to be outside, enjoying the spectacular views, and working with like-minded people who are here for the same reasons I am – a love of snow sports.
